Re: Misreading the evidence?
Zeff, a mathematician named Georges LeMaitre assumed from a part of what Hubble said that the universe is expanding. The rest of what Hubble said supported a different conclusion, that the universe we see is part of a universe unbounded in space and time. On another computer I have all of what Hubbl...

Re: Stephen William Hawking, 1942 Jan 08 - 2018 Mar 14
Hawking earned and richly deserves admiration for looking up at the stars, but there is no empirical evidence for the existence of what he spent much of his life studying: black holes. There is, however, a vast amount of money (taken from taxpayers without their informed consent) being spent on atte...

Re: electric sun theory
To animist: Take the “/sun.htm” off that URL and what remains will take you to the website of a Dr. Scott who taught electrical engineering for many years at, I think, the University of Massachusetts. I started college in electrical engineering, and though I finished in mathematics and economics and...

I don’t agree with Tetenterre.
Back when astronomers were saying Earth and Venus are much alike, Velikovski had predicted that Venus is very much hotter than Earth. Astronomers now know that Velikovski was right.
Tetenterre also appears to have missed the irony in what Rational Wiki has.

To budding astrophysicists, visit www.newtoeu.com and look around.
Then download the free PDF document, read it and tell us some of what you learned.

Re: Reasons to be grumpy
Yes I’m grumpy. After 12 years of hearing in Catholic schools that I can have an eternity in a place called Heaven, and figuring that I will have an eternity to watch what people here on Earth are doing, I realized in 1957 when I quit believing that stuff that as an atheist I won’t be able to do tha...

Re: Do you ever go to church?
UU, of course. How did my 85-year-old memory manage to fail?
In addition to the above, in 1967 or 68, my wife and I visited the UU church in Austin, TX, to hear a speaker from the nearby nudist camp. We visited the camp several times. Yeah, humanism!

Re: Do you ever go to church?
Twenty four hours ago (as I type these words) I was in a small Assembly of God chapel for a Toastmasters speech contest. In 2001 I was at a memorial service for a deceased friend. In 1965 I was at a wedding (mine) in a small church chosen by my agnostic fiancee's very xian parents. In 1957, at a sta...

Re: Do you ever go to church?
A few hours ago, for the first time in decades, I was in one. It was a chapel-like room in a much larger non-church building being used for a Toastmasters speech contest. An Assembly of God congregation uses the room and some of the space outside it. Otherwise, I see churches as places where fraud i...

Re: Grammer and phrases wot is irritating
From the former colonies across the pond:
Some folks say the irritation exists not in the grammer or in the phrases but in ourselves.
If that be true, then atwot (sic) shall I hurl my irritation?
Atwot else but the proposition that next year's grammar and frases must not differ from last year's?

Re: Come the Revolution...
Bellman, I'm not a lawyer but I took two semesters of business law and I retired years ago. Employee ownership in the US of A is done with ESOPs, employee stock ownership plans, so the owned businesses are corporations with the usual protections. The decision-making process ranges between moderately...

Re: Come the Revolution...
Bellman, please explain why 11,000 employee-owned businesses in the US of A haven't dried up since 2007? Please also explain why Harvard Business Review would say such businesses experience less employee theft and do less harm to the environment. And explain why the US Tax Code offers tax savings to...

Re: What does a hug mean to you?
I welcome hugs with open arms. A few years before my ethnic German (Strike 1) parents were born, an idiot posing as a child-raising expert published a book in which he told parents that touching their children would make them weak (Strike 2). My parents believed him (Strike 3). I was 35 when, in a ...

Re: Spam texts
Being retired, I'm picky. I kept my answering machine phone and decided to never take calls on my cell. I changed its Settings to send all incoming calls to my ans. mach. phone. When a caller says nothing (a robo call) my ans. mach. shows me no call received. I pick up only when I know a caller. I a...

The test?
Considering that when I'm seeing folks' eyes I'm also seeing their faces, especially their mouths, I'm okay with a 25/36 score.
Beware of folks who start sentences with "I feel that...".
They're giving you thoughts and wanting you to believe they're giving you feelings.

Candidates include Japan (when I was in the US Navy), Niagara Falls (at 8 and at 38 with wife), Smithsonian in Wash DC.
I haven't been to Europe, Africa, or So. America.
If there isn't a thread for What's the most interesting thing you have done? I might start one.
