Re: Happiness, hope and delusions

It is great that you can empathise with me. For me, Skeptics Annotated Bible was the eye opener. It really pointed out the terrible cruelties of God, the absurd contradictions in the Bible and all the inaccuracies. I most highly recommend it. That looks like an excellent resource. Thanks for the li...

Re: Happiness, hope and delusions

The craziest thing is that I used to be religious! I can't believe I spent all those wasted hours praying and worshipping this evil and imaginary God! Don't worry, a lot of us have been there. I was christened CofE but brought up as a catholic. Constant praying, bowing of the head every time you sa...

Re: Should the usurers be driven out of the temple?

The plain truth is that the person who suffers most from bad behavior is the person who behaves badly. I agree with that IF the person has empathy to those that they have behaved badly to. If the person behaving badly has no empathy then the person who suffers the most is the one who has been badly...

Re: Should the usurers be driven out of the temple?

This might be of interest, especially the point about the market economy relying on co-operation. If you want further reading, have a look at Coase's work. Nobel prizewinner and all that.... Hi Nick, thanks for the link. Interesting reading. I see no-one has mentioned exploitation? In fact o...

You are certainly on the ball today Alan. Another gem:
Alan H wrote:a far better future for mankind; one of cooperation, not competition; one where humans thrive to better all of humanity, not exploit it.

Compassionist,
Glad to be of help! :D If you get the time, another good one with some interesting sections on biblical discrepancies is Dan Barker's Godless: How an evangelical preacher became one of America's leading Atheists. Lots of good stuff in there.

Re: Should the usurers be driven out of the temple?

Dave B, I feel your pain. I have not had a pay rise in almost 5 years. But the office/sales staff have! Alan H, Thanks for putting that quote up. Much appreciated! I am going to have to watch that film again sometime as it's a good one. :D Damn good quote that: The acquisition of wealth is no longer...

Re: Should the usurers be driven out of the temple?

I think the core of the argument here is that capitalism is immoral. But if we break that down further: capitalism favours exploitation and it is exploitation that is immoral, then I think we are getting somewhere. Why do some people exploit others? Greed. They want more for themselves and have litt...

Because they are on very dodgy ground and I suspect deep down that a lot of them know that. They might not admit it to themselves and certainly not others, but I think it's there.

Re: Happiness, hope and delusions

only Christianity offers a guaranteed entry into an eternity in heaven thanks to the 'perfect redemption through Jesus Christ'. Nope, they pretty much all have their versions of going to heaven. How does he know that christianity is the right version? What about if he had been born in Pakistan and ...

Re: You can't prove a negative, and you don't need to do so

Incidentally, going back to the original title of this thread, what about: A negative can't be proved. Surely the need not to try to do so is implied. implied by what? And many negatives can be proved - it is universal negatives which are tricky. Even when the Iraq Survey Team had disproved - by mo...

Re: War

This is a very interesting topic for me at this time as I have been grappling with it recently. Strangely (or maybe not so) when I was younger and had some shreds of religious belief, I was very pro-war. Now (and for many years) I am totally opposed to killing and will not do so except in the most e...

Re: Humanists and Santa

My step-grandson will be asking questions soon (he will be 4 in June) and I am going to treat him like I do anyone else. If I am asked a direct question I will not lie. That is a breech of trust as far as I'm concerned. If the question is never asked then I won't mention the issue. I think an approa...

Re: You can't prove a negative, and you don't need to do so

No, me neither! We are just human. Flawed and have many limitations. One thing I have learned recently is to accept our limitations and try to be happy about them as part of who we are. Some are frustrating but being realistic about things is far more healthy than constantly beating yourself up abou...

Re: You can't prove a negative, and you don't need to do so

I think you are going to have to be more specific as to what "belief" is there, Cam! Do I have a belief in the sense of the use of that word as attached to religion? No, I don't think that I do. Absolutely. I don't have beliefs in the same sense of the use of that word as attached to religion, but ...

Re: You can't prove a negative, and you don't need to do so

I think that belief is not a choice but something that we are compelled to do, so bearing that in mind, I am absolutely fascinated by what compels the theists into their belief. I have yet to hear a coherent (and convincing) answer to that one. I have asked the question a few times to believers and ...

Re: Grand Theft Auto V makes fun of Atheism and Humanism

I think that Grand Theft Auto V makers have been unfair and imbalanced. They didn't make fun of Christianity or Islam yet mocked Humanism. The writers were probably christian and islam was not mocked as they were too scared to do so! Sorry, but this does not bother me at all. Unlike many religionis...

Re: Big Brother Tightens His Grip

To be honest, I was always in favour of the traditional TV channels of BBC1 & 2, but these days it's just garbage. Lowest common denominator rubbish. My wife & stepdaughter watch our TV but most of the things I watch are either on DVD or youtube and I watch them with my laptop while those two are wa...
