Re: Phil Woolas (ex) MP
OK, I had not seen that pamphlet - I now agree that he is not the sort that even the Labour party needs in any position of responsibility to the public. I would also be surprised if he pushes his appeal very much further. But then, he looks pretty arrogant - typical BNP material. Pah. The thinking ...

Yup. It's on YouTube if people can't be bothered waiting. I thought it was astounding how after all Hitchens had said about freethought, and after what the worldview director had been saying about investigating for yourself, then the head of school came up and basically told the kids what they shoul...

Re: 10 + 1 questions for Professor Behe
I'll be at the Glasgow talk if anyone's there. In response to the riposte to Q7, it should be noted that even though he's had nothing peer-reviewed in the past 5 years, he has published books, which do not require peer review. That's not how science works. You do the science first, then help the pub...

Re: Arguments for the existence of God
I'm not really following this thread very closely, but remember mickeyd that (according to Aquinas anyway) God is only incapable of doing things which are logically contradictory, like create a square circle, or make a rock so heavy that he can't lift it. It would be perfectly possible for God to cr...

Re: Gravity
The way it was explained to me (something to do with M Theory I think, can't quite remember who explained it to me) is that if we think of a fifth dimension and imagine that being a trampoline, and then you put a bowling ball in the middle of the trampoline, then other objects will be drawn closer t...

Re: Religious privilege
I emailed Terry Sanderson this afternoon and he got back to me whilst I was at work. It seems that the claim, as disgusting as it sounds, is true, and that in some LEA's, unbaptised children at Catholic school do not get the same subsidies as so-called 'Catholic children', even if they're at the sam...

Re: Religious privilege
I have to say I don't quite believe that part about unbaptised kids in the same school not getting the same benefit. The LEA where I went to school (Wirral, Merseyside) has a similar bus pass scheme for Catholic schools but it's for anyone going to the school. I've never heard of any such blatantly ...

Re: The Party Leaders and Faith: Two out of three ain't bad...
Doc Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg declared he does not believe in God, first revealing his lack of faith in 2007. At the time he was asked: 'Do you believe in God?' And said simply: 'No.' Both Ed and David Miliband have now categorically stated that they do not believe in God. Makes you wonder why they...

Re: Arguments for the existence of God
This is an awkward expression, but I don't it's accept it's rough and ready assertion. Fallacies are vital as a negative test for truth (showing what cannot be true). However, the fallacy of composition, where it occurs , is not a formal fallacy, but an unsupportable empirical induction. Absolute c...

Yeah, TV companies are very active in taking their content off YouTube now. I like to keep up with American politics and finding clips of Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Stephen Colbert is a nightmare, you can't even get it from the channel's website.

The Catholic League and his wife stick their oar in. I've never heard the BHA described as a radical atheist group before, I must admit.

Re: Dawkins and Hitchins planning to arrest the Pope!
Just about to head off to the protest, this morning I was interviewed on ITV's Daybreak and Sky News (really wanted to say something about Kay Burley), as well as BBC Radio 5 and Radio Scotland, and various newspapers. I also had a chat with Vincent Nichols who's a very nice chap, if a bit deluded.

Not the first person at all, the ontological argument was refuted within St Anselm's own lifetime.Maria wrote:I'm not the first person in history to have offered this refutation so you are probably familiar with it. I'm not sure what it is you think you are bringing that is new to the argument.

Best of luck, GK  Next Monday, Channel 4 8pm Peter Tatchell on the Pope's visit. No access to Ch.4 or BBC from outside the UK ...we are into a united Europe, nonetheless! P.S.: you as well as we pay a TV compulsory tax. I believe Channel 4 can be viewed on 4OD outside the UK, although I'v...
