Re: Britain's Religious Right at it again
When I read articles like that I'm never quite sure what to say because firstly they are so self-defeating in the first place there doesn't seem to be any point in offering a counter argument, and secondly the kind of people who buy into such nonsense and too far gone down the road of rabid foaming ...

Probably just as well they didn't include 'Life of Brian' in RE lessons.

Re: Welcome human number 7,000,000,000
It's also important to note that ensuring women access to education does not mean that they will choose to make use of it. It's a sad fact of my country the UK that many people do not value education, an attitude which is often learned from parents but which can also arise from peer pressure which f...

Re: Welcome human number 7,000,000,000
I wonder when population growth will level out. I have deep reservations that it will be the consequence of any active decision on the part of individual citizens. If anything it's likely to be a top-down decision by whatever authority has sufficient power and the will to impose restrictions on the ...

Re: Dr John Sentamu and psychosomatic spiritual entities
Trickle I suspect that, with sufficient lobbying and parliamentary support, we may see this being offered by the NHS Unfortunately it already is, hospital "Chaplains" cost the NHS £40 million annually, "Chaplains" are paid approximately double the salary of nurses. The witch doctor of York is merel...

Re: Complementary therapies
I am generally distrustful of complimentary therapies because I am sceptical about the proposed mechanisms by which they are supposed to work and find the woo aspect of most complimentary therapies off-putting. The only aspect of complimentary therapy which I believe is worthy of noting is the great...

Re: Homeopathy
My personal experience of those who use homeopathic products is that they defend it primarily on the grounds that 'it works for them'. As long as it's not being used as a substitute for actual medicine and the user is buying it with their own money I've no real opposition to the sale and use of home...

Re: Dr John Sentamu and psychosomatic spiritual entities
The NHS already caters for those who wish to use homeopathy so I suspect that, with sufficient loggying and parlimentary support, we may see this being offered by the NHS along with healing crystals and suchlike.

Signed, Having be disciplined as a small child at primary school for failing to show prayer the expected level of respect when we were expected to pray in lesson I think it's time for this general practice of compulsory religious observance to be set aside. As a small child I had no disposition towa...

Re: Should Christians lay off Wiccans?
Wiccans are something of a minority so I don't believe that Churches will have much in the way of a motivation to change their attitude. Firstly because there aren't enough Wiccans to kick up a fuss and secondly because a state is unlikely to make much effort to address the issue, especially when th...

Re: Street Pastors
On the issue of the state funding religious charities and organisations I am on the mind that this is acceptable as long as the goals and conduct are in line with equality and diversity legislation, or even ahead of it where the legislation is lacking. I don't believe that we should oppose those who...

Re: Scottish Devolution
I don't want Scotland to leave the UK but if it's somewhat the majority of the Scottish want to do I wouldn't, as an Englishman, oppose it because they should have the right to self-determination. I'm also not opposed to the further devolution of power away from central government and parliament to ...

Re: I don't believe in God - Ed Miliband
His comments are rather bland and neutral which is what I would expect from a politician who realises that he isn't able to get the easy ride of saying he's a bit religious like David Cameron did but can reduce any reaction to his atheism by being non-confrontational on major issues at the moment, i...

I quite like church bells but then again I grew up with them so I don't really notice them. I once lived over the road from a church and the only problem with their bells is that they must have been automated or alternatively had some madman tied to the ropes because they would go off at odd times, ...

Re: Should protests outside abortion clinics be allowed?
I am inclined to support a cut-off point at around 20 weeks because premature babies are beginning to survive at around that age, and with medical advances, we can reasonably hope that more will do so in the future. It is a complicated issue, though, and I can respect the argument for keeping the l...

I haven't served in the armed forces but I have friends and family who have who are not religiously inclined. The general impression that I got from those individuals was that the padre's were people who they could approach and talk too about their experiences without the issue of coming out. Of cou...

Re: Should protests outside abortion clinics be allowed?
Trickle, I think your last two posts are excellent, and reflect some of my own concerns as well. It is wrong to present abortion as just a conflict between atheism and religion. Crucial principles are at stake. When does life begin? When (if at all) does the woman's right to control her body over-r...

Re: Should protests outside abortion clinics be allowed?
Trickle namely the premise that an individual considers human life to be precious. But a 20 weeks old fetus isn't a human life, is it? It's 100% reliant on the mother for survival. Moving onto the practice of protesting outside of abortion clinics itself I can't help but wonder if the views of thos...

The perception that Muslims are fundamentally opposed to the values of western society such as free speech and equal rights for women is one such false dichotomy which I believe can be safely disregarded. I don't want to criticise, but I wonder if you wrote exactly what you meant (or is that vice v...
