I also thought it was very good, but Tetenterre has a point about Sachs. And in general it was a bit too civilised and non-confrontational for my depraved taste.

Re: When Will The Church of England Shut Up Shop...
Many of them require an enormous amount of effort and expenditure for their upkeep -- I suggest that it is reasonable to ask: is it worth it? I can see the point of the public purse keeping one or two as examples of the genre, but I see no sense in trying to maintain more than a few. The two don't ...

Re: When Will The Church of England Shut Up Shop...
It's nice to think of the church dying out - as long as it's not replaced by even worse organisations.
And I hope someone will look after those lovely buildings.

Bertrand Russell was once asked this question. His reply was : “I will say: (to god) ‘I’m terribly sorry, but you didn’t give us enough evidence.’ ”

Re: Junk mail
But I am more annoyed with unwanted callers and our notice asking people to respect our privacy and not ring the bell if they are selling things or advertsing or preaching seems to be working. It also gives us something to point at angrily when someone does ring. I'm with jaywhat on that. Junk mail...

Richard Branson gets lost in the fog on his latest ballooning adventure. He loses height until he can see the ground, and he spots a man walking his dog. "Hey! Hello, you ! Where am I?" shouts Branson. "You're in a balloon, about a hundred feet above me and my dog" the man replies. "You're an econom...

This one's been around for decades, but you may not have seen it: The following is an unfortunate translation of a programme note for Bizet's Carmen, which was produced for the alleged benefit of English speakers. I have yet to locate the original source, but the programme was reproduced in The Boo...

When they started reorganising the colleges in Sunderland and Newcastle, it is said that they came up with the name City University of Newcastle on Tyne. It was noticed and changed before the opening date, but all manner of stationery and notices had to be scrapped at immense cost.

There were some strange people called 'gays',
And God riddled their bodies with AIDS.
But if he'd made it clear
It's a sin to be queer,
Then how would the choirboys get laid?

I went to the Palace for tea;
She said, 'do you fart when you pee?'
I replied, 'not a bit,
Do you belch when you shit?'
And I felt that was one up to me.
Nick, the Cape Horn one is a parody of Edward Lear, and I have seen it attributed to the poet Swinburne.

Re: Living Alone or Lonely?
I have been astonishingly lucky. I met my wife in 1970, aged 23; we were engaged within a few weeks and married in six months. We've just passed our fortieth anniversary and have been very happy indeed. We had two kids and are now grandparents. We resent every moment we have to be apart. If she died...
