Re: The Theme Song To Your Life

I suppose my theme song used to be "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails covered by Johnny Cash. I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything What have I become? My sweet...

Re: Do you ever go to church?

seems a very odd setup, and you haven't quite answered all I asked. I mean, how many of the songs are hymns? As you say, someone of another faith would and could not be asked to sing Xian hyms, but do you think such a peson would have been appointed anyway? It is very easy for me to say this as an ...

No, maybe not, but it is certainly a metaphor for some of the ills in maintained sector education.

Anyway I'll say no more on the matter as people's opinions seem very entrenched.

Re: Educating Boys

I've stayed out of the last bit, mainly because any talk of taxation sends me to sleep. There is much of what the Government funds through taxation that I wish I could opt out of, but I can't. However, just like I may choose not to ride the local bus, because the service is crap and I'm lucky enough...

Re: Educating Boys

The school's job is to educate. I'm frightened by the idea that schools are raising our kids.
It frightens me too, yet as Pastoral Leader at my school I no longer amazed when the school has to do the job of nurturing values because the child is bereft of basic social skills.

Re: Educating Boys

It does bother me that there are people in the world who'd like even half the chances that we, over-privileged foreigners, get every day. We build our monstrous houses for 4 people that could easily fit a dozen or more. We throw out restaurant food that is perfectly edible because portion sizes are...

Re: Educating Boys

Private medicine and public/independent schools exist because often those who can afford it feel they are more entitled to quicker and better health care. They don't want to have to wait and their money buys them position and privilege. Yet, they are often the first to take advantage of less fortun...

Would you be in favour of raising taxes to do that?

Re: Educating Boys

I don't in the slightest feel sorry for wealthy parents who pay taxes and then choose to spend more for independent. Why should I? I pay taxes and yet I can't access all services/options out there. Even ones I should be able to. I didn't ask you to feel pity. Certainly those parents I know acknowle...

Re: Educating Boys

I have always understood the inequality of independent education. And it is true, I am occasionally troubled by the unfairness of the system. Yes, the children I teach do benefit from a better education, which they get because their parents can afford it. The question you must ask is why do parents ...

Re: Educating Boys

They should be nurtured, not forced. The Scandinavians could teach us a lot about early education and they do better in the International league tables than either England or Scotland. Raising the starting age for formal school and introducing a structured play curriculum in the kindergarten years ...

My evidence arises from recent discussions with senior school inspectors.

Anyway, it works for us. By the way we're non-selective.

Re: Educating Boys

Is everyone here comfortable with the idea that boys and girls should somehow be taught differently? Emma Absolutely....because they ARE different. That is not to say taught different things, but taught in different styles. My school also has a girls' division, on a different site. We teach boys an...

Re: Educating Boys

Following the thread hi-jack I'll steer this back to the main topic.... Educating boys. I am an educator of boys. I teach at a school for boys, currently 230 at the junior school, where I teach, and a further four hundred or so in the senior department. I am currently senior master with responsibili...

Bang goes the Theory.

Watched BGTT tonight on BBC1. There was a very elegant explanation by Dawkins as to how the eye, long suggested by some as being too complex to have occured through evolutionary process, evolved in around 400,000 generations. In terms of the marine animals described that would have been less than 1/...

Re: Last episode of Heartbeat

The episode ended with Oscar impaled on a hayspike following a punch-up with East German Stazi spies.

So your suggestion is probably appropriate.

I think it was the final ever episode.
