We have just published and featured a new illustrated article on the HVG website which some of you should find interesting. It has been written by HVG member Kevin Dixon for a Darwin 200 website and our own site.

Nice historical summary of an interesting topic. We are, after all, animals and it's nice to see how perspectives have shifted in society. What annoys me is where people get selective about what aspects of humankind's animal nature they choose to embrace and which to eschew, based on their own agenda.

On the 'what annoys me' theme what annoys me is how often we hear, in news reports of trials about some terrible crime for example, something like 'they behaved like animals' when many (non-human) animals (not all, possibly) behave far better than what is being described ---- for example in the care for their young.

For once I agree!

Functional cruelty is common to nearly all animals, but cruelty with no functional outcome beyond the gratification that comes from inflicting pain seems to be rather too common in humans.
