Our cat understands me to some extent in a basic way. Not my language ,of course, but my jestures and stance etc. She understands the opening of a cupboard door - to some extent, but is often quite wrong or else every time a cupboard door opened she would be getting food.

My question is regarding pets but might apply to offspring as well. Do you always reward good behaviour - or just sometimes. Or never.

With dogs, (when I kept them), I would reward 'good' behaviour consistently. With children, I am more likely to encourage intelligent or curious behaviour, unless it's dangerous.

Whatever "reading for pleasure" involves in my estimation I enjoy. Can't seem to concentrate on those "things I ought to/should read" these days! I well remember the pretentiousness of the expectation that one should Homer's epics and all that other stuff. Getting over-involved with reading the Hippie age psychology cannon (R. D. Laing et al) was the beginning of my cure for that. Poring through vast tomes for college and uni was the final cap on it.

I appreciate the language used in older books - enjoy reading Shakespeare occasionally - but I enjoy good writing in the mode of any period.

I do enjoy sci-fi (if well written) for its inventiveness - I would far rather read "forwards in time" than backwards - tomorrow is always something to look forward too for me (providing it does not contain such things as the dentist, lung-function tests, treadmill tests etc.!!!!!)

If you were Chancellor, what tax would you increase, reduce, scrap or introduce?

Introduce: 100% tax on all non evidence based "health" therapies.

Increase: top band of tax back to 50%

Scrap: the tax change Brown made when he scrapped the 10p rate for the lowest paid (can I scrap a scrap?)

Reduce: the tax I perpsonally have to pay. That's only fair, now, isn't it?

Which TV personality annoys you most?

Most of them. I find it hard to single any out but the one is the Julia something who prevents me from watching Countryfile. She really is appalling.
