feline depression

#1 Post by Ninny » October 16th, 2012, 8:05 am

My cat gets depressed when her Feliway runs out. I can always tell, and plug in a new one. Jaywhat calls it "homeopathy" and sneers. Dora gets better straight away. So could someone settle the argument for me? It is not cheap! Below is what they say on the Feliway website:

What is Feliway & How to Use?

When a cat is secure you will see it brush up against furniture rubbing it face on it.
This is a cat marking it’s territory as safe and secure. The absence of these familiar marks is believed to lead to am increase in anxiety.
Ceva laboratories have managed to mimic this natural marking and put it into Feliway.
When cats are stressed (what stresses cats) or ill they stop marking their territory as safe and secure. This can lead to unwanted cat behaviours
Feliway helps cats naturally cope with stressful situations and stops unwanted cat behaviour, providing a contented household for you and your cat.

Good heavens, I did not know there were such products for cats!

I assume this is some kind of artificial pheromone or something? If such I would guess that every cat has a unique odour to other cats. That could offer the idea that Dora thinks she has some sort of "invisible friend" and misses this entity when the thingy runs out? ( )

Or is there just a little catnip in there somewhere? Have you tried any catnip toys as a substitute?

Sounds a little bit to me like "Marketing over substance" which is what we in advertising used to say about Magners Cider.
(I only work two days a week in advertising so please don't blacklist me!)

Dora likes a bit of catnip, but it doesn't solve any problems - just gives her a few moments of ecstasy in which she bites her own leg!

Wonder if that is the cat-equivalent of pinching oneself to try to get back to reality!?

I wonder what effect the Feliway has on humans. I do not sniff the furniture but I feel pretty OK when it is pumping its mystic smell into the air.

So-called alternatives to Felliway - but you probably won't want to contemplate most of these, Ninny!

This might be interesting as well.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

this should really be in the cats v dogs thread, but I am suffering from mild vicarious feline depression after reading that dogs are officially more intelligent than cats!
