In Gloucester for a meeting Friday and bought a second hand book on one of the most famous Glos companies (H. H. Martyn - architectural decorative stuff, statues etc - and founded the Gloster Aircraft Company) - worth every penny of the £16 I spent on it. Needed somewhere to eat lunch and have a look through my purchase. Chose "Rene's Cafe", a bar in a church yard (!)

Great place. There was a book case with books you could borrow, games too - one couple were playing Scrabble. Dimmish with table lamps, muted music and the smiles of the chatty staff looked sincere. Bags of atmosphere, walls lined with wine bottles (ceiling too in one room!), tables from one seaters to twelve. Someone came in with a cut on her hand and got first aid from a staff member (who was careful to wash her hands before and after.)

A huge, freshly cooked, Cajun chicken sandwich on multigrain bread with kettle chips and salad, washed down with a half pint of excellent real ale, cost me £6-80. This compares with the sad small portion of chili con carne with rice and mug of tea that cost me £5-80 two days before in a local cafe type cafe - no atmosphere, no socialising, no books, no games, no smiles.

This could become my favourite lunching place. Think I'll pass on the live pop music evenings though . . .
