Trojan, as many of you probably already know, was a record label responsable for bringing some seriously cool music from Jamaica to the UK. I've liked the music - and the logo - since I was a child.

It's also the brand name for Trojan's condoms on this side of the pond...sorry, just had to share that.

They were issued to the troops in WW I.

In WW2 soldiers used extra large size condoms to cover the muzzles of their guns to keep rain and dirt out. The story goes that Winnie ordered that the packaging of these be marked, "Standard size".

I cannot believe I have managed to a) change my avatar and b) put my old one, Darwin, here as a memorial. No! He has not died, but his avatar has. I have apologised to him in Talking to myself - like you do.
He still exists, of course, being rather dirty on Ninny's postings.

To explain my current avatar, this is quite simply me. At the risk of being solipsistic, I have pushed Darwin to the backround. I have also learned the mean of solipsistic.

Just found this from 2008. Strange how things change. Change your avatar today and it changes right back to when you started on the forum. If this happened in real life imagine your family photos! Playing naked in the sand at Blackpool with a beard and bent double with age!
Anyway Darwin is not here now. He was put out of his misery ages ago (last year) and is now replaced slightly in our lives by Dora.

Drawer full of them? I wish. One lovely handknitted pair that always come camping with me (Scotland, remember? )
Problem is that the fashionistas mostly assume only women wear multicoloured socks, and having size 8 clodhoppers I need mens socks. Which sadly are mostly far less exciting...

I agree, Fia, men's stuff is mostly boring. I have three wooly hats: black, dark grey, lighter (but not much) grey. Same goes for gloves. Most winter jackets are boring black/blue/grey - I have an old "Regatta" one that really needs retiring, but it is red and I will only give it up when people start refusing to accompany me if I wear it!

Even in the climbing/walking shops a lot of the gear is dark coloured or even camouflage! What kind of idiot goes walking in camouflage? One fall and you disappear, the rescue team might search for days within feet of you in bad weather.

OK, I am not going to be doing much in the way of walking or climbing, but why should that limit my colour choice? I get fed up seeing "unisex style" stuff in women's shops that I would like to wear simply because it is bright. But the "room" in them tends to be in the upper front region whereas I need it in the back and, these days, in the waist!

It's one of the few things I feel sorry for western men for. Other cultures have glorious, comfortable men's clothing. Us women can wear what we like in whatever colour. Men's apparel is so boring: black, grey, blue, brown - all the colours I choose not to wear.

And what's the tie all about? I've always seen it as a means of ensuring conformative behaviour by reminding you you have a noose around your neck....

I liked the boss of the security firm, ex-commando officer, who designed the company uniform with no ties and with short sleeved shirts. His rational was that sleeves get rolled up to almost any point on the arm and most men cannot tie a neat tie-knot or leave it slack/take it off in hot weather. So take those two problems out of the equation.

I would rather see my cardiac consultant in tee or polo shirt on the ward instead of the long sleeved shirts and ties he always wears. Potentially very unhygienic.

I can't remember if you met my neighbour George (across the road) Shetland born and bred but a Rastafarian, when I spoke to him this morning he was wearing a pair of trousers you would be proud of, his wife dresses the same; even to work (she works with people with special needs) Not a million miles from what you do.
