For 40 Years, This Russian Family Was Cut Off From All Human Contact, Unaware of World War II

An amazing story!

Perhaps we could have a thread of stories from history that are inspiring/amazing/etc?

Have you seen the film/DVD "Searching for Sugar Man" - great story - hardly history as it is about a musician in apartheid Sout Africa; but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Trailer here...

On the opening thread: I felt for the prejudice they met, that caused them to go into the wilderness, but was not surprised by the degeneration their lifestyle suffered, indigenous people have a long time to learn how to best use the land but they had a steep learning curve.

Will keep my eye open, there must be a million stories from around the world!

bit of a historical mystery here about failed commoner Sam Cameron. A short article in the Indie says that SC is the direct descendant of Nell Gwynn, Charles II's paramour; apparently randy Chas had no legitimate offspring, and he was of course not married to Nell Gwynn. BUT the Wiki article on SC says that she was descended from Chas and does not mention Nell (of whom Chas said famously "Let not poor Nellie starve"). My mum used to love this quotation - and TV quizzes, and she would usually humorously shout out "Charles II" as an answer for any plausible question. But once, when the question mentioned Nell Gwynn and the correct answer was clearly "Charles II", she got confused and tongue-tied :laughter:
