"Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.
It matters that you don't just give up."

Very sad.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:
1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Yes, very sad - moving. I think those words quoted by Tetenterre were said to his sons.

still prefer the Oscar Wilde quote "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking up at the stars"Tetenterre wrote:"Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. OTOH, some of us in the gutter were drunk, so the stars they saw were not real

I am reminded of what Plato said, "[Thales] was so eager to know what was going on in heaven, that he could not see what was before his feet. This is a jest which is equally applicable to all philosophers."
To fix yourself only on the ideals is to set yourself up for a great fall. Small wonder why it has been said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Hawking earned and richly deserves admiration for looking up at the stars, but there is no empirical evidence for the existence of what he spent much of his life studying: black holes.
There is, however, a vast amount of money (taken from taxpayers without their informed consent) being spent on attempts to find them.
There was recently much publicity in popular media of claims to have found data which have been interpreted to support the existence of a black hole, but its existence has yet to be confirmed.
